The Next Morning

Ugh. I squint as sunshine beats down on my face. Where am I? I jerk upright, letting the sheet fall to my waist. Miles’s boat. I’m in the middle of his bed. Alone. Where did he go? More importantly. How do I get out of here gracefully?

I snatch the sheet to my chest as my heart thumps against my ribcage. Shit. Last night. The stars. The saltwater. The sex. Oh, my God, the sex. His tongue. His fingers. His mouth. His stamina. His determination to make me lose consciousness from endless orgasms.

The night started on the deck and didn’t end until I couldn’t lift my head off the mattress. There’s no way I’ll ever experience something like this again. It was a unicorn night. A vacation fling that will warm my nights when I’m 80 years old. My stomach cramps. Lord, I was better off thinking sex was overrated.

I groan, but it sounds more like a whimper. This is not good. I don’t do one-night stands, and this is why I don’t drink too much and let the concept of paradise invade my brain. This is so embarrassing. He must think I’m a total slut. I slip out of the empty bed and back up until my legs smack into the end table.

“Shit.” I spin around and catch the lamp before it crashes to the floor. I right it and grab my clothes.

“Nice ass.” Miles’s deep baritone voice comes from the doorway.

I slam my eyes shut. There goes hoping to get away without seeing him. Not that sneaking off a boat when we could still be in the middle of the ocean was possible. I turn to face him and nearly swallow my tongue.

He leans against the door jamb, shirtless in black jogging shorts that hang so low his Adonis belt is on full display. But the view doesn’t stop there. It goes all the way up to his well-defined abs, muscular chest, and arms and ends with a mug of steaming coffee in one hand and a plate full of eggs, bacon, and fruit in the other. I squint. Is that a chocolate chip cookie? Holy wow. The man knows how to play the game.

I lick my lips as my belly growls, “Hi.”

“I figured you’d be hungry after last night.” He smirks as he pushes off the doorway and stalks across the room. The boat sways under his movements. But all I see is him, food, and caffeine.

“Actually, I’m starving.”

“Good.” He winks. “Because you need your energy.”

After he hands me the coffee, he grips my chin, forcing my gaze to meet his. “What were you hoping to do? Swim to shore so you didn’t have to see me again?” The spark has slipped from his eyes, hardening his features.

“I don’t do this. I don’t have one-night stands with strangers.”

“How about we label this as the beginning and not something fleeting and tawdry?” He sets down the plate, removes the mug from my hand, and deposits it beside the breakfast that’s making my mouth water, or maybe it’s him.
